Alumni Reunion 2010
Alumni Reunion 2010

Around 400 former students and guests returned to campus on Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th May to renew old friendships and revisit their place of study in our biggest and best Alumni Reunion weekend yet.

The Alumni Reunion 2010 weekend saw graduates taking part in a wide range of activities, including the Carnegie Cup Alumni Football Tournament on Saturday.

The six-a-side football competition is for all alumni, students, staff and former staff, with a maximum of ten players per team, and was played at Headingley Campus. Twelve men's teams and twelve women's teams took part in the event, more than ever before, on a day which proved a hit with all those who attended. 'The Fast and the Furious' were the ultimate winners of the women's tournament, taking it on penalities in a nail-biting climax to a relaxed and friendly occasion. Leeds Met's second student team lifted the men's trophy in a tight compeititon which saw several alumni teams making it through to the final stages, including the 'Raggie Rovers', 'Conway's Team of the '80's' and 'Kirkstall 2000'. The event was supported by Mark Fenton.

Following the great success of this year's Carnegie Cup Alumni Football Tournament, we plan to hold similar events for other sports. If you were a member of a University team, or just have an interest in sport, why not let us know and get involved? Whether you want to take part, make a suggestion or be on the committee, we'd love to hear from you.

On Sunday, our former students had the opportunity to play a round of golf at the Sand Moor Golf Club in Leeds followed by a soup and sandwich lunch. Congratulations to Steve Crewe who won the Stableford competition. Keep checking your alumni website for news of forthcoming golfing events and activities, including a weekend in October 2010.

Professor Susan Price officially welcomed alumni and their guests back on to campus on behalf of the University when alumni met up with their former classmates at the Gala buffet luncheon. After a delicious four-course meal served in the paneled splendour of the Acre Room, Headingley Campus, our Student Ambassadors were on hand, with special guest guides, to accompany alumnion their choice of four afternoon tours. These included:

  • a tour of Headingley Campus, during which alumni visited their old Halls and viewed Carnegie Village, the new student accommodation that is bringing students back to living on campus. Student Ambassadors and alumni enjoyed swapping stories of their exploits, proving not much has changed over the past 60 years, even if the accommodation has!

  • a chance to see their 'old haunts' in a new light on a ghost tour of Headingley Campus, once a war-time hospital and a private home. Ian Crossland, a keen University archivist, was on hand to tell creepy tales of mystery on a tour round the most haunted sites on campus.

  • a look at 'Leeds Met in the City', including the spectacular new Rose Bowl and Broadcasting Place buildings, both of which have won numerous awards for their green credentials and cutting edge design.

  • a backstage tour of the legendary Headingley Carnegie Stadium complex, home of Leeds Rhinos, Leeds Carnegie, and the Yorkshire County Cricket Club, led by David Hall, Chairman of the Archives Committee for Yorkshire County Cricket Club, who was able to grant access to areas not normally seen by the public.

Following the tours our guests gathered for afternoon tea in the Jubilee Room, where they reminisced whilst inspecting a special display of archive materials, reflecting fascinating periods in the University's history. These included a display of artefacts recovered during the recent archaeological dig on campus.

Many alumni brought along pictures and mementoes from their student days to share with fellow classmates over the cause of the weekend, with several of them arranging to meet up again next year.
